How to look after your Scottish Grown Cut Nordmann Fir Christmas Tree

Keep your tree outdoors till 10-15th December so it will last through Christmas and New Year without dropping too many needles.

  • When you get the tree home, saw 2.5cm (1in) off the bottom with a pruning saw.
  • Place in a bucket of water so the tree can drink.
  • Check and top up the water when the level drops

Bringing your tree indoors

  • Gradually increase the temperature of the tree when bringing indoors rather than placing it directly into a very warm room.
  • The warmer the room, the more water the tree will need and the more it is likely to drop needles.
  • Avoid placing your tree too close to a fire or radiator, as this will cause excessive moisture loss and needle drop.
  • Place your tree in a stand that has a well to fill with plain water. Do not use soil or sand which will block the pores in the bark of the tree.

Keep your Christmas tree stand topped up with water. Your Christmas tree may drink 2-3 pints (1-2 litres) of water per day, depending on its size and your central heating settings. This is very important as once the water level drops below the tree’s trunk, sap will re-seal the bark within a few hours, preventing the tree from drinking any further water

With care, cut trees should last about four weeks.
