Go for a Forage, Learn about Identification and Take Home a Bucket of Mushrooms
In this four-hour outdoor workshop you will learn about and participate in:
How to prepare buckets of spawn for pasteurisation by preparing a substrate and pasteurising it with boiling water, drilling suitable holes (fruiting sites) before leaving them to steam and cool.
You can then take this bucket home and, a few weeks down the line, you'll have some lovely, tasty edible mushrooms.
Mushroom Life Cycle
Whilst we are waiting for the buckets to finish cooling down, we will discuss the basic mushroom life cycle, along with different types of growing set ups. Understanding the life cycle is key to better successful mushroom cultivation and also very interesting!
We’ll go for a walk in the woods to discuss what we see and talk about the most common and safe genuses to identify, as well as good books for starting out and progressing.
If you would like to join Jen’s 'Bacteria and Fungi People' Facebook page ahead of time, the link is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/189483364955736
(A good resource for help and content for later on!)
About Jen, the Mushroom Queen
Originally from a Physics and Maths background, her interest in fungi has been growing over the past five years, initially through an interest in cultivation and then spilling into a general awe of fungi, foraging and mycology. In the rest of her time, she is a keen adventurer, film-maker, photographer and artist with an enthusiasm for any new peculiar topic!
Numbers are limited to 10. We ask that you maintain social distancing where possible. We will be working outside so no masks necessary but it might be worth bringing your own in case you want to lean in for ID purposes.
You will be emailed with a meeting place at Glendoick the night before.
