Prune shrubs in February-April

Late summer-flowering deciduous shrubs can be hard-pruned between February and March/April

  • Buddleja davidii
  • Hydrangea paniculata  the more you prune, the larger the flowers
  • Lavatera (mallow)
  • Leycesteria
  • Perovskia
  • hardy fuchsias (you can wait for the new growth and then cut back the dead growth.
  • Wisteria

Roses are best pruned in March to April. Cut long stems back by 1/2 to 2 thirds.
