Vireya Rhododendron (indoors)
Several hundred species of Vireya rhododendrons occur in Malaysia, Indonesia and surrounding areas; many have spectacular flowers including bright orange and yellow and some varieties are scented. Unless live in an area where it does not freeze, these need to be grown indoors in a +/- frost free but not over-warm conservatory or greenhouse. A few species are hardier (Pseudovireyas: H2-3). All vireyas require very sharp drainage (use coarse bark as the main compost ingredient). Do not over pot as they like a restricted root run. Give as much light as possible in winter. Some are straggly and need pruning. Larger species can reach 2m or more in 10-15 years. Vireyas like similar growing conditions to the cooler climate orchids and are equally spectacular.
