Lawn Care in May Tips from Glendoick Garden Centre

Feed and Weed:

This is the time of year to feed your lawn. If there is a lot of moss or weeds, use Evergreen Complete which combines feed, weedkiller and mosskiller.

Mowing Techniques: Maintain an Ideal Height

For first mows of the year dont cut too short. Remember to sharpen your mower blades to minimize damage to grass.

Feeding: May is the time to give a boost. Apply the fertilizer in even coverage across the entire lawn. Slow-release fertilizers provide a steady supply of nutrients.

Irrigation: Water Deeply and Infrequently. A good soak is better than a few light sprinklings.

Weed Control: Use Evergreen Complete which kills weeks and feeds at the same time.

Aeration: Healthy Soil Structure: Over time, soil compaction will hinder your lawn's growth and health. Aeration helps break up compaction and allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. You can use a core aerator, which removes small plugs of soil. Also helps reduce moss growth.

Patching lawns: Fill in Bare Spots: Patch Magic. Lawn bare spots are ugly and tend to fill with weeds. Prepare the bare spots by loosening the soil, spread the seed evenly, and lightly rake to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the seeded areas moist until the new grass establishes.

Sowing Grass Seed

Best time: April-May/ late August & September when soil is warming up but its not too hot and dry.

  • The better the preparation, the better the results.
  • Eliminate weeds with weedkiller, or hand weed.
  • Dig or rotovate the site to a depth of 20-25cm (8-10in).
  • Ensure surface is level:, tread the area several times in different directions and then rake several times also in different directions. (not in wet weather)
  • Apply & rake in 70g per sq m (2oz per sq yd) of general-purpose fertiliser.
  • Sow the grass seed evenly according to instructions on the box & lightly rake over to cover seeds with soil.
  • If weather is dry, water gently. Keep birds off.
  • Avoid walking on it for 3-4 weeks
  • Dont cut grass short till well established.
